| Sat 9th Apr 2011 - Donation and Presentation to RAF Shawbury |
Press Release by RAF Shawbury
The Shawbury based ‘Taking Football to Africa and beyond’ Appeal has received a major donation whilst sending out 3 deliveries over the past week. On Saturday 9 April the appeal organiser, Sqn Ldr Neil Hope travelled to Perdiswell Leisure Centre, in Worcester, to collect shirts and other items donated through a collection from Worcester Lions Community FC.
The club coaches youngsters from pre-school up to 7 before they move onto junior teams. The collection was organized by Sue Bentley who runs the self funded community club. At the collection Neil met the young footballers and presented them with the end of term certificates whilst members of the coaching staff presented medals and Easter eggs.
Also on 9 April, Neil delivered a bag full of England kit to Ruth Walmsley. Ruth is about to travel to Conakry Refugee School in Guinea and will be passing on the kits, donated by the English FA, to students at the school. The School was founded in 1993 to provide an education for refugee children from Liberia and Sierra Leone after many thousands had fled to Guinea to escape from the brutality of civil wars in their own countries during the early 1990s. After spending time in refugee camps in various parts of Guinea many came to Conakry. Most of these children were deeply traumatised, losing family members on the way, witnessing atrocities from all sides and enduring the desperate conditions of the refugee camps. Another recent donation was to a head teacher from St James ACK Academy in Kimilili, Kenya. Edwin was visiting the UK and Prees, in Shropshire, through a link before his school and Prees C.E Primary School. The link was set up by Rachel Bradbury who works with the link project. The bag included 50 Wolverhampton Wanderers shirts donated by the club recently. Finally, the appeal has been the conduit for organising the delivery of 20 computers and 40 boxes of football kit to a charity in Mombasa, Kenya. The link was set up though Chris Streater at North Shields Juniors, near Newcastle upon Tyne, and Dr Cliff Ferguson, the Chairman of Glad’s House, working with underprivileged children and adults in the Kenyan city. Sixteen boxes are currently being stored at Braeburn School in Nairobi, Kenya, with another 8 awaiting delivery, ready for the forthcoming June visit by the RAF Shawbury football team. During the weeks tour the team will be playing 3 matches and delivering over 3000 items of football kit to Kibera and Mathare slums, Gilgil and various other points around the Kenyan capital. To date the appeal has now delivered 38088 items, including 16501 shirts to 33 countries worldwide. Donations are continuing to arrive at RAF Shawbury. Anyone wishing to donate to this appeal can do so by contacting Neil on 01939 250351 Ext 7572 or at cro@direct.shawburyigs.raf.mod.uk Further details on the appeal can be found on the RAFFA website at http://www.royalairforcefa.com
